Optimising every student’s opportunity to achieve their full potential is at the heart of West End State School’s commitment to all learners. Our teachers plan and implement the curriculum in ways that ensure every child can access learning and experience success.
We offer a wide range of programs designed to support, extend and challenge students across all year levels.
Prep – Year 2 Curriculum
Prep lays the foundation for a child's learning and ongoing success at school. Our Prep – Year 2 Curriculum aligns the Australian Curriculum, Age-Appropriate Pedagogies and assessment practices to maximise children's engagement in learning and enhance learning outcomes.
Year 3 - Year 6 Curriculum
At West End State School our aim; in partnership with parents/carers and families, is to ensure that every day, in every classroom, every student is learning and achieving. Teaching across Years 3 to 6 is guided by the Australian Curriculum.
Music
Music is a key strand of The Arts curriculum and plays an important role in students’ learning at West End State School. Our classroom music program is based on hands‑on learning, with all classes learning ukulele and percussion, alongside singing and music notation.
Opportunities to extend musical skills are available through the Instrumental Music Program and school choirs. Evening concerts are held at the end of each semester to develop students’ performance skills and confidence.
Further information is available in the WESS Music Program Handbook under the Music in the Curriculum tab on the school website.
Languages
West End State School offers a rich Languages program, with four languages available to students in Years 5 and 6: French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
Students in Year 4 participate in a Language Taste Tester program across Term 3 and Term 4, allowing them to experience each language before selecting one for further study.
Academic English is also offered as a selective program for English as an Additional Language students who are already bilingual or multilingual.
Health and Physical Education (HPE)
The Australian Curriculum HPE program includes two components:
Personal, Social and Community Health
Movement and Physical Activity
Swimming and water safety lessons are conducted by PE Specialist Teachers and qualified swim coaches:
Term 1: Years 1–6
Term 3: Years 5–6
Term 4: Prep – Year 4
Students with specific cultural or religious needs are supported through alternative arrangements. Families are encouraged to discuss this with the PE Specialist Teachers if applicable.
In Term 2, students participate in track and field events in preparation for Sports Day. During Terms 3 and 4 (when not swimming), students participate in ball sports.
Water Safety and Learn to Swim Programs
The Queensland Department of Education provides professional learning and curriculum support to assist schools in delivering water safety and swimming education, including settings where access to a pool or water location is limited.
Prep Gross Motor Program
Gross motor skills involve whole‑body movements that use large muscle groups, such as standing, walking, running, jumping, climbing and maintaining posture. They also include coordination skills like throwing, catching, kicking, riding bikes or scooters, and swimming.
These skills are essential for children’s everyday functioning, playground participation and sporting activities, and are a key focus of the Prep program.
Home Reading
Reading is always a priority at West End State School. Students are encouraged to read daily using age‑ and level‑appropriate personal and library books.
A sequential home reading program for Prep to Year 2 supports the development of confidence, fluency and comprehension. Parents and carers play an important role by listening to and encouraging their child’s reading on a daily basis.
Students in Years 3 to 6 are encouraged to read regularly for both pleasure and research during home reading time.
