Inter house carnivals

Participation as an individual in sports carnivals occurs in Term 4 for Swimming (Prep – 6), Cross Country (Term 1) and Track and Field (Term 2). There are Inter-House Carnivals for each of these sport disciplines. These carnivals are designed to maximise participation by all students. Children are allocated to one of four sports Houses for inter-house sport education activities on enrolment:

Inter School Sport and Intra School Sport

Our school participates in the Mt Gravatt District Interschool Sports competitions. All children in Years 5–6 are eligible for the inter school sport program. We also have a parallel Intra school Sport Education program available for students not participating in the Interschool competitions.

Students in year 4 will participate in intra-school sport activities at school in readiness for year 5-6 inter and intra-school sport.

Each activity in each program incurs a cost and families can choose an option that suits. Students and their parents/carers need to select 4 preferences. These will be collated in Week 3 of Term 1 so sports buses and coaches can be organised.

Dates (these dates may vary a little due to term lengths)

The Winter season starts in approximately Week 5 of Term 1 and finishes in approximately Week 5 of Term 2.

Uniforms - Inter School Sport only

These jerseys are not to be taken home by students individually but are collected at the end of each game and a team roster of parents/carers is organized to wash and return them. The unisex navy shorts with and sky blue side strips are also the sports shorts and MUST be worn for all inter school sport and intra school sport going out of the school. The navy blue football/soccer socks MUST be worn for rugby league, soccer and AFL.

Safety

Shin pads must be worn for soccer (Regional Sports Office directive). Head guards and mouth guards are highly suggested for contact sports such as AFL and Rugby League.

Training

The commitment your child makes to a team sport involves training. The skills are important, as is the responsibility to the coach and other team members. Developing a sense of teamwork is a valuable lesson that is learned in sport.

Permission

The permission form must be completed to allow your child to participate and travel by bus (for inter school sport) to his/her chosen sport. This must be signed and dated before your child will be allowed to participate. Permission needs to also be provided by parents/carers for intra school sport activities.

Sport selection

Teams are put together for both winter and summer sport/activities by Week 4 in a first in best dressed basis. Returned forms will be date stamped. In most cases the first or second choice will be available. Once a sport/activity has been chosen changes will not be permitted.

Throughout the year, a number of before or after school sport clinics are run by external providers, at West End State School, to promote interest and skills in particular sports, and a cost is usually involved.

Representative Sport Pathways

Mt Gravatt District and Metropolitan East Teams

Mt Gravatt District Team

If children are performing at a HIGH level in their sport, they are eligible to trial for the Mt Gravatt District Team. The PE team will nominate eligible students and parents/carers will be notified. Schools are limited to only send a certain number of children to trial. At school trials MAY be held if there is a large number of children interested in a sport. Once nominated to trial, children will attend the trials which are usually held after school at varying locations across the Mt Gravatt District.

Students will be informed when trials are happening. They are able to nominate through the PE teachers or alternatively nominate through scanning the QR code.
