Celebrating NAIDOC Week at WESS
WESS is excited to celebrate NAIDOC Week with a week of meaningful learning experiences that recognise the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Indigenous Australians. NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for our school community to come together, learn from one another and acknowledge the enduring connection of First Nations peoples to Country, culture and community.
Throughout the week, students and staff will participate in a variety of activities designed to encourage reflection, creativity and cultural understanding. The celebrations will begin with a Deadly Door Walk, where students will visit classrooms across their sector and leave positive and encouraging feedback notes. This activity promotes connection, respect and community spirit across the school.
On Tuesday, students will gather for a special NAIDOC Assembly at the Jane Street Oval, providing an opportunity to celebrate together and reflect on the significance of NAIDOC Week. The remainder of the week will feature a range of engaging activities, including a Deadly Quick Write session in Dirrum Yani, where students can share their ideas and perspectives through writing, Dreamtime Stories in the school libraries, and Deadly Drawings in the Art Room, allowing students to express their learning through creativity and artwork.

Monday 27 July – Deadly Door Walk: Visit classrooms and leave a deadly feedback note.
Tuesday 28 July – NAIDOC Assembly: 1:50pm–2:50pm.
Wednesday 29 July – Deadly Quick Write: Dirrum Yani, 9:00am–11:00am.
Thursday 30 July – Dreamtime Stories: Library sessions during first play.
Friday 31 July – Deadly Drawings: Art Room sessions during first and second play.
We encourage all students to get involved and take part in the week’s events as we celebrate, learn and honour the cultures, stories and contributions of our First Nations peoples. Together, we can continue building understanding, respect and appreciation within our WESS community.
